Founded in 1868, the world-renowned International Watch Company of Schaffhausen, Switzerland has produced some of the finest watches ever made…on par with Vacheron & Constantin and Rolex in terms of the precision and caliber of its movements. They are known as the only watchmaking firm in German Switzerland, IWC, directed by Hans Ernst Homberger for much of the 20th century, the third and last of the Rauschenbach heirs to run the factory as a sole proprietor. Homberger joined his father\'s company in 1934, and took control after his death in April 1955.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following timepiece from the firm, a men’s stainless steel, beefy lug model in excellent condition. This watch dates to 1958 and is powered by a classic Caliber 89 mechanism, arguably one of IWC’s most successful calibers.
Triple-signed, it measures 42mm lug tip to lug tip and 35.2mm in width (36.9mm with crown). In inches this works out to be just over 1-5/8” tip to tip and 1-3/8” wide, not including the crown. My watchmaker David has fully serviced this watch (disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated) and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The black, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, the original dial that’s been professionally restored. It features a 60 second outer chapter of recessed gold dots, raised silver painted hour markers, original silver metal Dauphine-style hands and ‘sweep” center seconds hand. Signed International Watch Co. SCHAFFHAUSEN below the 12 and SWISS at the base of the dial.
The acrylic crystal is in excellent shape, a new addition. The three-piece case is solid stainless steel and excellent as well, complete with beefy lugs. The steel winding crown is in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is snap-down, vacuum seal in excellent shape with no wear or engravings, past or present. Inside is its high-grade mechanism signed International Watch Co., Swiss with serial number #1,482,336, dating it to ca 1958. Below the balance it is stamped C.89.
The inside of the case lid is finely engine turned and stamped ACIER INOXYDALBE, STAYBRITE – INTERNATIONAL WATCH CO., SWISS - PROBUS IWC – SCAFUSIA.
This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 18mm black deBeer Paris alligator grain calf leather band with INOX buckle. I love high grade watches that are understated and timeless in design – nothing shows a person’s good taste as a watch like this.
