Mens NICE 1947 Bulova 14K SOLID GOLD Fancy Case 21j USA Original Art Deco Watch:
$382.00
I’ve always enjoyed collecting and selling vintage Bulova watches. The company was founded by Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue. Like Gruen, it also had a factory in (Bienne) Switzerland, established in 1912 and dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements. The firm is known for its aggressive advertising campaigns and for being the first to advertise on radio – with an announcer stating “B U L O V A … 8:00p.m., Bulova Watch Time.”
I am happy to offer for sale the following stellar timepiece from the Bulova firm, a men’s 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold fancy scallop case model that dates to 1947 and is in excellent order. This is an “Excellency” model, part of a group of 21 jewel watches produced by Bulova following WWII and made entirely in the United States. The Excellency series meant top-of-the-line and this one is no exception, retailing for $125 when new or $1,250 in today’s dollars.
Triple-signed for Bulova it measures 36mm lug tip to lug tip and 21mm in width (23mm with crown). This works out to be just over 1-3/8” long by 13/16” wide, without the crown. My Bulova-trained watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 21 jewel, 7AK caliber mechanism, ensuring it winds smoothly and keeps accurate time.
The original silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, untouched since it left the factory 69 years ago. It features a 60 minute outer track border, raised gold numbers, original gold Baton-style hands and sub-seconds dial with ‘sweep’ original gold seconds hand. Signed BULOVA below the 12.
The raised acrylic crystal is in excellent shape, a later addition. The rectangular form case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and pristine, complete with scalloped sides. The gold-finished winding crown is in excellent order, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is solid 14kt yellow gold and in pristine condition, no wear or engravings. It is stamped 14K GOLD BULOVA with case number along the opposite edge.
Inside I find a fully serviced and high-grade Twenty One Jewel movement signed Bulova Watch Co., USA - [Caliber] 7AK, 21 Jewels, 47. The ‘47’ means it was made in 1947. The inside case back is stamped BULOVA – 14K GOLD – NEW YORK.
This Bulova “Excellency” has been fully disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 16mm black Fluco Germany Teju lizard grain leather strap with matching gold tone buckle. An elegant, mid-century timepiece made right here in the good ol’ USA – a beauty in person!
