This is a fabulous piece for your Mexican folk art collection.
It is a large, thick, carved wood dough bowl that was hand-painted by the artist \"Valez\" from Mexico. The image is Saint Lorenzo, the Patron Saint of Cooks. Vibrant and beautiful with a nice hardening antique oil on it, so washes easy. Notice the cat lower left. The bowl is rustic and carved from wood. Very vintage feel to it.
It measures 20 1/2\" by 11\" by 2 1/2\" deep.
San Lorenzo was of Spanish birth and was a deacon in Rome, responsible for delivering alms to the poor. During the persecutions of the Christians under the emperor Valerian, San Lorenzo was commanded to deliver the \"riches\" of the Church to the Roman Prefect. San Lorenzo gathered up the \"poor\" under his care and presented them to the authorities. Enraged, the Prefect ordered San Lorenzo to be burned on a grid iron. The saint endured his martyrdom with great fortitude and even humor. At one point he directed his torturers to turn him over for he was already done on one side. He died in 258 A.D. San Lorenzo is considered the patron saint of the poor, August crops, cooks, comedians, chickens, and protects against fire.
