Large 26mm button that is large enough to have gone on an overcoat. This would date to the mid-1800s. Made in England. It has an attractive castle design on the front, and in that these family-associated livery buttons were made in hundreds if not thousands of different designs, to order, I think it likely this specific castle exists somewhere in the United Kingdom. The castle\'s stones, turrets, main door, windows, etc. are loaded with very bright gilt, with the rest of the button a pleasing medium brown. I must apologize for my 60 year-old eyes being unable to make out the name on the back of the button. As you can see from the 2nd photo, it\'s all there. A good glass should make it out and younger eyes too. These livery buttons were often associated with certain families that would have their family crests, mottos, etc. on the button used by their employees, servants, etc. These livery buttons were also enormously popular all over the world, anywhere English textiles and finished products were sold. A modern example is a blue blazer with designs on the buttons. The design (lion, horse, bird, flower, etc.) is nothing more than an attempt to recreate a popular look from long ago. Then and now, if you\'re going to wear a jacket or overcoat to impress, you have a design on the buttons. Livery buttons have been dug in Crimean War sites in the Ukraine, Civil War sites throughout the Old South, in Canada on both the west and east coasts, in South Africa, France, \"down under\", India, etc; anywhere the old British Empire cast its shadow.
