Extraordinary panel of brown katazome cotton, dating to the late Edo or Bakumatsu period (early/mid 19C). It features a complex motif of tiny phoenixes, kirin fire horses, birds, and flowers. The end was left unresisted on the diagonal, which may have figured into a larger overall diagonal pattern. This is a ryo-zome textile, dyed evenly on both sides to heighten contrast. Other than some light wear, the handspun cotton is in excellent condition for its age, dyed with a tannin-rich brown that is still clear and fresh. Katazome textiles that use no indigo are extremely uncommon, making this piece a rare addition to any serious collection of antique Japanese cottons....Measures 160 cm x 33 cmClick on any of the photos below
