Mid 19th Century American School Portrait of Baby w/Stork - American Folk Gem:
$130.00

This is an American School gem! This portrait of a baby floating on a lily pad in a swamp (vegetation and dark color seems to suggest this as opposed to a pond), is exceptionally well done - repairs aside. Judging by the aging of the canvas and oxidation of the stretchers, not to mention the style of pierced frame, we place this in the mid-to third quarter of the 19th century. This piece was purchased from the estate sale of an antiques dealer/collector. What was missed, seems to be the highlight of this piece. Behind the baby to the left is the image of a stork dropping another baby onto a lily pad. This is as much a folk painting as it is a standard portrait. At first we thought - given the baby flailing, that the stork or pelican was attacking the infant, which gave rise to our nickname for this piece (Baby and The Swamp Goose). It is a large piece with obvious primitive repairs, but still a very special/rare piece. The sight measures 29 3/4\" x 24 3/4\"; framed measurements are 37 1/8\" x 32 1/8\". Please read condition report and see photos.
