Mid Century crackle glass pitcher azure blue 3.6 inch West Virginia blown glass
Azure blue is the color and where the glass is extra thick (neck band, base, rim) it looks like cobalt blue. This little beauty is West Virginia glass, hand blown into a mold by one of the hundreds of workers who plied their trade in the dozens of companies blowing glass in that region. Mid-century is the time frame.
It is 3 5/8 inches tall with a pulled out spout and rim that tips back a little near the applied handle. It has a faux ring or snake or around its neck - you can feel where the mold dips in, inside the pitcher. The mold mark is slightly visible below the handle, too.
\'Blown into a mold\' is still handblown glass - it can be identified as such by the flat bottom with slight pedestal.
This is an excellent example of the craft. showing off what one man can create with a long blow rod, a glory hole, punty and perhaps a helper to apply the handle or nip the spout. Thousands of these little pitchers were made, and we managed to collect several hundred over the years (1,800 at our peak). Alas, downsizing and lack of space has convinced us to share.
This one has tiny flecks and bubbles in the rim, with a mix of both large cracks and tiny sparkling ones at the bulbous part - the handle matches in color. There are no cracks in the glass, other than the pattern.
