$1200.00

Circa 1855 pocket globe in original, textured faux red leather case. There is no indication of the maker & it\'s un-dated. The only way I was able to date it was from the last use of New Albion in atlases & globes.
Steel spindle, paper, lacquer or shellac. Hand-colored. The globe identifies North America as New Albion. There are also the Friendly Isles, Sandwich Isles & Society Isles. Hindustan. Thibet [sic]. Chinese Tartary. United States are only on the east coast, of course. No exploration or trade routes are identified. Meridian of London. Tropic of Capricorn. Tropic of Cancer.
The colors of the globe & its case are most accurate [on my monitor] in the first photo of this listing.DIMENSIONS: globe is 1-3/8\" diameter. Case is 1-1/2\" in diameter & 1-1/2\" high. Top & bottom are of equal size. The globe & case together weigh 0.9 ounces / 24 grams. They are equal in weight - 0.4 ounces / 12 grams each.
CONDITION: overall the globe is in good plus condition. The white spots are glare from the very glossy surface and are not white spots on the surface. There is a crack in the surface varnish/shellac - see photos - there is no separation from the globe. There are also some places [shallow dimples] on the surface of the globe where it appears the shellac/lacquer was possibly chipped? I\'ve added a close-up collage of the crack & one of the dimpled areas.
The textured faux leather case has no separations but shows some scuffing, wear & soiling, not surprisingly considering the age of the globe. The hinge has no issues. The closure works but is not tight. No rust on any of the metal. The interior maroon corduroy fabric is intact but a little dusty; no odors. The globe turns on the spindle, as it should, in the you for looking. Please contact me with questions about the item or shipping. Happy to send any photos you might want.
