Description: This is a one-of-a-kind, museum quality, signed set consisting of a matchingnecklace and earrings made in the 1950s by Modernist artist Howard Behling Schleeter. Theset is made of hand carved desert ironwood set in silver. This type of ironwood is native only to the Sonoran Desert of the American southwest. It\'s characterized by it\'s lovely striped color, which the artist has used to enhance the relief of the carving, producing a cameo like effect. It\'s a durable and very dense wood, and is the only wood that sinks in water. The pendant has a polished triangular greenstone of aventurine that sparkles in the sunlight.

The necklaceis 10 1/2 inches in over all length with chain. The pendant is 1 5/8 inches wide by 1 7/8inches high. The earrings have silverscrew backs and are light and comfortable. They are 2 1/2 inches long. There is no damage, and no restorations. The original patina is intact and the set has not beenpolished. There are light surfacescratches on the silver consistent with it\'s age. These add to the vintage beauty of the set,and are primarily visible on the back of the pendant. The set has always been in a smoke-free Environment. This is a unique, beautiful and wearable piece offine art sure to give pleasure for many years. It\'s also a good investment as HowardSchleeter\'s works have been appreciating in value in recent years. Schon gallery currently has a similar set made of bone, silver and brass for sale online for $2,150.Provenance: This set is from a private collection that belonged to a chiefarchitect for the Bureau of Indian Affairs who was based in Albuquerque, New Mexicoin the 1950s. It was there that he met Howard Schleeter. Hepurchased several pieces of art from Schleeter, of which this set is one. The set is being offered by his granddaughter.

About the Artist: Howard Behling Schleeter (1903-1976)
\"Howard Schleeter studied at the AlbrightArt Schoolin his hometown of Buffalo, New York, though he consideredhimself to be primarily self-taught. He traveled to New Mexico in 1929, and later made New Mexico his permanent home. Schleeterstudied under Brooks Willis during the 1930\'s and worked in several mediumsincluding gouache, watercolor, oil, scratchboard and engraving. In 1936, hereceived a commission from the WPA and the murals created, though he workedprimarily in abstraction, depicting scenes from the West. He had several morecommissions during 1936 and 1942 in locations including Santa Fe and Washington, D.C. In 1945, the Encyclopedia Brittanica referred to Schleeter as \"an artist\'sartist.\" He received local attention when he became one of the firstartists chosen by Peter Hurd for his significant contributions to New Mexico\'s art.Schleeter taught at the University of New Mexico in 1950 and 1951, and was a member of theArt League of New Mexico.\"(Biography from The Owings Gallery).
