The tradition ofhand-made pipes in Recanti, Italy dates to the 1850\'s.
Hully Briars, employing 40 workers, was already well established during the1900\'s. Mr Igino Moretti and his wife joined Hully Briars when at its peak, employing about 50 workers. Half the pipe production was
destined to a third party, while the other half was sold under the nameBEP-SON, a combination of the first syllables of both owners\' names: Beppe andSonia.
Soon after, Mr Moretti became the principal Hully Briar pipe maker, but thecompany itself had to close down. Having passed a railroad test, Mr Morettithen had to choose between driving trains and making pipes!
Thankfully, the latter was he choice and consequently, Mr Moretti founded thebrand \"Moretti Recanti\" in April 1968. During his first years, MrMoretti continued to produce pipes for others and started his own line carryingthe name Moretti. Today, Marco Biagini, Mr Moretti\'s son-in-law, continues the hand-madetradition based on the teachings of the founder. Mr Biagini producesapproximately 500 hand-made Moretti pipes per year.
For the pipe smoking world traveler, Moretti pipes are still made in the smalltown of Recanati, in the Marche
region of Italy. In fact, Moretti\'s workshop is located across the street fromthe house where the famous Italian poet, Giacomo Leopardi, was born.

MORETTI TODAY
Today Moretti Pipes are famous all over the world. Each pipe is meticulouslyfashioned by hand using
Calabrian briar seasoned for 10-15 years or Bog Oak-Morta seasoned for4000-6000 years. Unlike most of the so called \"hand-made\" availabletoday, a Moretti pipe is completely hand done by a true artisan with noelaborate machinery.
For example, Marco holds the piece of briar in his hand while boring theTobacco chamber, and the same with the shank bore!.The process is rewarding butvery demanding. An important feature which distinguishes Moretti Pipes is thefact that they are almost all of a smooth natural finish. Only about 5% oftotal output is rusticated and they are usually to meet a customer\'s request. What does Marco do with pipes have too many viisble sandpits and defects? Hesimply discards them, and doesn\'t save them to make rusticated pipes. Any pieceof briar which demonstrates too many
defects are simply thrown away. Normally such pieces would be sandblasted orrusticated (carved) by other pipe makers, but not at Moretti!
This does not mean Moretti pipes are not sold for high prices. Surprisingly, anentry level price for a smooth natural-finish Moretti pipe would be less thanmost sandblasted/rusticated pipes available from other pipe makers today. MrBiagini also produces unique straight-grained pipes: a great source of pridefor both the artisan and the lucky pipe smoker and collector who owns one.Marco seems happy with his pipe making philosophy, which is unlikely to changeafter 41 years of pipe-making history and of professional, artistic, andfinancial satisfaction.
