Description

Meeting between Mr. Reed, as Commissioner, and Chinese Mandarins, on May 4, 1858 — from a Drawing by a Chinese Artist.

This engraving depicts the diplomatic negotation that took place in the suburb of Tianjin between US Envoy William B. Reed (1806-1876) and Zhili Viceroy Tan Tingxiang on March 4, 1858. The final Treaty of Tianjin was signed by Reed, Kweiliang and Hwashana on June 18, 1858.

During the Second Opium War (1856-1860), the US funcioned as mediator and used the invasion of the English and French Troops to pressure the Qing government for the same privileges granted to other powers.

The prime content of this issue would be the two full page Winslow Homer prints, captioned: \"The Bathe At Newport\" and \"Picnicking In the Woods\", along with the great two-thirds page illustration of: \"Salt Lake City - Brigham Young\'s Harem and the Deseret Store\", being a very early graphic on the Mormons. There is a related article on the same page: \"Salt Lake City\". The front page features a nearly half page illustration of \"General James Watson Webb\" with an accompanying article. Other illustrations include 3 prints relating to the article: \"Butterfly Parks\". Also a full page: \"Meeting Between Mr. Reed, as Commissioner, and the Chinese Mandarins, on May 4, 1858 - From a Drawing by a Chinese Artist\" (courtesy of the New York Herald). The back page features several cartoons. Complete in 16 pages.

The print has been published by Haper & Brothers in his Newspaper \"Harper\'s Weekly. A Journal of Civilization\", in 1858 (Vol. II - No. 88).

The \"Harper\'s Weekly, A Journal of Civilization\" was an American political magazine based in New York City. Published by Harper & Brothers from 1857 until 1916, it featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays on many subjects, and humor, alongside illustrations. It carried extensive coverage of the American Civil War, including many illustrations of events from the war. During its most influential period, it was the forum of the political cartoonist Thomas Nast.

Along with his brothers James, John, and Wesley, Fletcher Harper began the publishing company Harper & Brothers in 1825. Following the successful example of The Illustrated London News, Harper started publishing Harper\'s Magazine in 1850. The monthly publication featured established authors such as Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackeray, and within several years, its circulation and interest grew enough to sustain a weekly edition.

In 1857, his company began publishing Harper\'s Weekly in New York City. By 1860 the circulation of the Weekly had reached 200,000. Illustrations were an important part of the Weekly\'s content, and it developed a reputation for using some of the most renowned illustrators of the time, notably Winslow Homer, Granville Perkins and Livingston Hopkins.

Among the recurring features were the political cartoons of Thomas Nast, who was recruited in 1862 and worked with the Weekly for more than 20 years. Nast was a feared caricaturist, and is often called the father of American political cartooning. He was the first to use an elephant as the symbol of the Republican Party. He also drew the legendary character of Santa Claus; his version became strongly associated with the figure, who was popularized as part of Christmas customs in the late nineteenth century.
