Most Unusual Complex Antique Victorian Key, \"S Withers Unpickable\" Fabulous:
$166.88

This is an unbelievably complex key, probably for a safe or strongbox, made by Samuel Withers and proudly boasting that it was \"Unpickable\" - looking at it I can quite believe it. It is beautifully presented on an antique facetted key ring and both ring and key are in excellent undamaged condition. The key measures 8.25 cm in length and the ring is 3.75 cm in diameter. Samuel Withers was the most prominent member of a safe-making family established by his father, George Withers, famous throughout the 19th century for their top quality safes made in the Birmingham area.

I have additional exciting information courtesy of an experienced key collector and member who was kind enough to share his knowledge on the subject.

This key was made by Edwin Cotterill and would have been fitted to a safe made by Samuel Withers, who did not manufacture locks for his safes but bought and fitted Edwin Cotterill locks among others marking them with his own logo. Edwin Cotterill was predominately a lock and key manufacturer only and his reputation in the lock industry was equal to Bramah, and these locks helped to sell the higher end safes for any safe manufacturer because of the lock maker\'s reputation. This key is for one of the most famous locks ever made in Victorian England patented circa 1847 and known as The \"Cotterill Climax Detector Lock\" designed to be impregnable, and had a reputation of living up to it\'s name.
My thanks again, Ray for your generosity in providing this information.

I must point out that another experienced collector has voiced a different opinion on the maker of this key suggesting it may be an Acme design - I must leave it to the buyers to decide on the basis of their own knowledge and research.
