Theintaglio is engraved with several wonderful features. Faith is represented witha female figure in the center of the intaglio, faith is pointing upward towardsa break in the clouds where light is penetrating. She is carrying a scrollwhich reads “I know that my redeemer liveth, Job XIX 25”. The scroll restsatop a skull symbolizing the triumph of faith in the scripture over mortality. To her left is a plinth.

The recordfor Tassie 14805 suggests that the Plinth has the inscription “EG” in a cypher with an urn atop it. It looks like an \"ES\" to me.

Itrequires an incredibly talented intaglio carver to create this level of detailin amber. There were several intaglio artists in the period that were talentedenough for this level of work, including the Brown brothers, who were lateremployed in the court of Catherine the Great.

Thetheme is representative of Georgian style mourning rings and brooches whichwere typically painted on ivory. These are common in mourning art of theGeorgian period. However, mourning intaglios of this quality are incrediblyrare. I only found a few in the Beazley collection (William Tassie 4817 byBrown; Tassie 14998, 15003, 15036, & 15037). It is hard to say whether anyof these intaglios documented in the late 18th and early 19thcentury are still in existence.

The approximateintaglio size is 0.83 inches (2.1 cm) Length by 0.71 inches (1.8 cm) Width

Theintaglio and ring weigh 9.5 grams. The ring diameter is slightly less than 22mm which would correspond with a American size 12.5

Material:

Thesaleeer from which I purchased this intaglio identified it as amber. Not having seen too many amber intaglios,I took the piece to a GIA / Master Gemologist Appraiser.I only mentioned to the gemologist that I was concerned it was glass. Heinspected the intaglio under magnification, checked its refraction index. Basedupon the refraction index of 1.54, strong anomalous double refraction, flowlines identified under magnification, the curvature of the back of the intaglio, softness of the stone, and marks on the background suggesting that a hot pointwas once drawn on the intaglio, the gemologist indicated that he was very confidentthat the intaglio was amber. Furthermore, the gemologist indicated that he didnot believe that a hot pin test was necessary.

Ifrequested, I can have the gemologist generate a confirmatory report. If you area buyer that wants a hot pin test performed prior to the sale I can also havethat done.

Condition:The intaglio is in wonderful condition. There are some scratches to thesurface that are normal wear for a piece of this age, they are to the left ofthe urn and plinth and around the personification of faith. No significantchips or cracks are visible. There are a number dents to the ring. I have made every effort to provide accuratephotographic evidence of any blemishes I have identified during my inspectionof the item.Payment:
