WHO READSNANCY DREW?

That isa question I get often from friends when they find out I have over 2,000 NancyDrew books in stock in the various formats. Then, they ask what I mean by the different formats and if I dare try toexplain, their eyes sort of turn glassy and I can tell they are on overload.

Butreally, the answer to who is still reading Nancy surprises people. For one thing, those who grew up in the1930’s and 1940’s remember the iconic blue and orange covers to the books. My mother, before she passed, spent the last11 years of her life in a nursing home.I would come across a great find and bring it to her so she could seeand her eyes would glow! She was shy andreclusive and Nancywas her window to the world. Idiscovered there were MANY woman, and men as well, who read Nancy Drew books soI began donating books to the facility and even if they could no longer see, just the sight brought back memories long pushed aside. The staff said they often read to some of theresidents who could no longer read and they brought such joy to them.

Thereare those who remember the days when families would read rather than watchTV. Kids remember grandparents reading Nancy to them and theywant to pass that tradition on to their own children and grandchildren. When the loved one is gone, just the sight ofa Nancy Drew book brings back a special memory that nothing and no one can takeaway. A memory of time spent togetherrather than everyone going their separate ways.

So, whoreads Nancy Drew? Just aboutanyone. All ages. Men AND women. Young and young at heart. Nancyis ageless and regardless how many books you have in the cloud, it will neverreplace full experience – the feel of the book.No recharging needed to pick up an actual book and turn the pages.

ABOUT THIS SET:

This isa rarely seen complete set of Format 3 Nancy Drew books which include volumes 1through 14. This is the cover mostpeople remember from the 1930’s and 1940’s when Nancy first emerged on the scene captivatingboth girls and boys alike. She was not asissy. She was smart, pretty, daring, compassionate, generous and never took a case for personal glory nor forpersonal gain. Every “case” was to helpsomeone else. She possessed both a heartof gold and the heart of a lion, a true champion of lost causes.

The veryfirst format covered volumes 1 through 6 and a single printing of volume 7, “The Clue In the Diary”. This first volume was blue with navylettering outlined in orange on the cover and solid navy lettering on the spineof the book. There was no inking at allon the tops of the pages, this was also before the silhouette of Nancy was added to thecover and the endpapers were blank.

Theseearly formats had a glossy frontispiece and three internal glossy illustrationsby famed illustrator Russell Tandy. Onlythe first 13 volumes of the series had these glossy illustrations by Mr. Tandy. Much later, in 1959, when revisions of thestories began, slowly, line drawings by Bill Gillies and Rudy Nappi were addedto the revised stories and all newly penned volumes starting with volume 35.

Startingin 1937, with the fifth printing of volume 13 and with the first print ofvolume 14, the three internal illustrations within the body of the text of thestory were removed. However, thefrontispiece remained in the glossy paper until the second print run of 1943and covered the first 17 volumes in the series.

Volume13, “The Mystery of the Ivory Charm”was the last of the glossy internals.“Only four printings (1936B-1 to 1937B-4) contained all of the originalfour Tandy illustrations. They arehighly sought-after by collectors” (p. 246, “Farah’sGuide” by David Farah, 12th Printing).

As anadded bonus, I am including the following extras to enhance your Nancy Drewexperience:

  • “The Lost Files of Nancy Drew” is the “scrapbook” Nancy Drew would have kept had she thought of it. It contains original cover art reproductions, samples of the fashions of each decade of Nancy, items such as the ski passes from #29, how the showboat was made to appear and disappear, Nancy’s passport, notes about all the characters we have come to know and love and many more tidbits which will appeal to Nancy Drew collectors and fans of all ages.
  • “The Mysterious Case of Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys” goes more into the cultural aspects of the decades since The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew arrived with period photos and what was happening in the world at the time of when the books were written – from the 1920’s through the 1970’s.
  • “Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her” by Melanie Rehak. This is a well written, interesting account of the inventive ladies (and men) who gave us Nancy through the years.

  • David Farah is a gentleman who has devoted much time and effort in researching the print history and development of Nancy Drew. He has a very comprehensive guide which is updated every so often. The most recent is “Farah’s 12th Guide” and generally considered by both collectors and dealers the “bible” for Nancy Drew.
  • The copyright page of the Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Dana Girls and other Grosset & Dunlap series books were not updated from printing to printing. This page was only updated when the book was revised.
  • A “First Edition” generally applies to the unchanged, original story.
  • A “First Print” is just that, the first time the title appeared in print.
  • Titles 1 through 34 in the Nancy Drew series were written originally with 25 chapters and 200+ pages.
  • Titles 35+ were originally written with 20 chapters and 180-189 pages.
  • Starting in 1959, all original stories (or “first editions”) were revised/edited. These new, revised stories, in some instances, are completely different from the original stories. Eventually, titles 1 through 34 were revised to contain only 20 chapters and 180-189 pages.
  • The “Digger” endpapers are a combination of #6 “The Secret of Red Gate Farm” (Nancy behind the tree on the left) and #9 “The Sign of the Twisted Candles” (the man digging on the right). By the way, the man is NOT digging a grave!
  • When reading the “Farah’s Number” shown on the chart below, here is what it means: The year shown is the actual print year. The letter is which printing of that year. The final number is what printing of that title this particular book is actually. So, in “The Secret of the Old Clock”, if it shows a Farah’s number of 1960A-86, we know it was printed in the year 1960. We know this was printed in the first print run of 1960, most likely early in the year. We also know this was the 86th printing of this title since the original was written in 1930.
  • Sometimes, on the chart, you will see under the column “Farah’s Number”, something that looks like this: 1952B-58 to 1958B-69 for #5 “The Secret of Shadow Ranch”. This means the actual book was not changed for those twelve printings starting with the second printing in 1952 and continuing unchanged until the third printing in 1958.
  • Changes for the tweeds would include changing the endpapers, adding book lists in the front or removing them, revising the story from the original 25 chapter/200+ page books to the 20 chapter/180+/- page book. Without the dust jacket, for books which fall into this category, it is impossible to tell exactly which printing you have unless someone wrote an inscription on the inside.
