NGC 1783 8 Reales El Cazador Shipwreck Coin & 1883-O MS-62 Morgan Silver Dollar!100 Yrs Apart Sunk 50 Miles off New Orleans Coast!

Thank you for viewing our listings.

This listing is for a pair of coins with incredible history, a Spanish Eight Reale Silver coin from the Shipwreck of the El Cazador and a Mint State-62 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar.

The first coin in the set is a Genuine NGC certified Spanish Eight Reale Silver coin.

The Eight Reale was minted in 1783 in Mexico City, Mexico under Assayers F F.

The assayers were Francisco Arance Cobos and Francisco de la Pena.

It is in fair condition after spending 200+ years in sea water!

The Eight Reales coins are also known as Pieces of Eight or as Spanish Milled Dollars.

The Spanish Eight Reale coins were in use in the 13 Colonies and were recommended by Thomas Jefferson as an official silver dollar for the United States.

They were accepted and were legal tender in the United States until 1857.

This is also the design that the United States used when producing Silver Dollars.

The second coin is also NGC certified.

It is an uncirculated, bright white, Mint State 62 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar.

It was minted in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1883.

This Silver Dollar was minted exactly 100 years after the Eight Reale was minted!

The El Cazador set sail from Vera Cruz, Mexico for New Orleans on January 11, 1784.

She was carrying thousands of silver coins to stimulate the Spanish holdings in the New World.

After a month at sea, the El Cazador sank in the Gulf of Mexico (just 50 miles south of New Orleans), taking with it, the precious cargo and hundreds of lives.

This was a disastrous blow for Spain. It could not produce enough silver coins to stabilize the economy in New Orleans.

Sixteen years later, in 1800, Spain agreed to cede Louisiana back to France.

Three short years later, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for 3 cents an acre. This purchase doubled the size of our nation.

The history behind these coins is amazing and it would be a fantastic addition to a coin collection.
