This is a wonderful find of a beautiful, hand carved, traditional, antique cuckooclock that was created in the Black Forest of "Germany" about 95 years ago. It has no makers mark and the only clue is a faint, "Germany" on the very back. This does not surprise me since maker and origin was not an international requirement until 1920. This very clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown almost exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest and has been the choice of carvers there since around 1860. There are five, large, hand carved grape leaves adorning the front of the case with another grape leaf found on the wooden pendulum. The orignal mahogany finish is still very nice! There is a large hand carved wooden bird atop the clock, looking as though he's ready to take flight. The upper frame is a separate carving and attached to the clock case with the old hook and eye system. The clock is quite impressive and the ideal size too measuring about 11" or so high (not counting the chains or pendulum), about 6" or so at its deepest point, and about 9" wide. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features large, easy to read Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy, matching hands to point out thetime. There is a hinged wooden door on either side of the case and both are secured with a metal hasp. The doors open easily to allow access to the front of the mechanical movement in case any adjustments are ever needed from this end. The clock has a fitted wood back and latches securely. Iteasily removes to allow access to the weight driven, early rack style mechanical inside the case. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need tobe pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The wooden bellow tubes are in good shape and the tops look and sound good too! Atthe bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird opens the small door above the dialand stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding chime inside the case before retreating back inside theclock, closing the door behind him. The wooden bird reappears at the top of eachhour and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before retreatingto the safe confines of the inner clock; fascinating! This clock has another old feature you don't find on newer clocks. There is a short braided cord protruding from the case near the chains. When pulled, the cuckoo activity will advance a half hour each time (it's pulled) which is a great feature in case you need to recalibrate the time and the cuckoo. The clock worksquite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it should though it is an oldclock and we don't know the service history. The movement does, however, look to have had service over the years. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives atits new home. We always recommend to our clock customers to service theirantique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so willpreserve a great clock like this one and keep it running strong. Theclock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a woodengrape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.I've looked the clock over fairly well and can't find any missingpieces and only slight signs of use. I did find a small chip on the dial but very hard to see and certainly not detracting...I doubt if anything could! It is a very impressive old clock and an excellent example of the greatness of Black Forestworkmanship. It will certainly capture the imagination of any guests in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, rare, antique German timepiece with a real history behind it. offer with confidence; I have no doubt that you will love this clock!
