Description: Cameo: This huge museum quality bacchante shell cameo is mounted in a 15k gold brooch.A Bacchante is a follower of Bacchus (Dionysus) and is a wonderful mythologicalcameo theme. She has artfully depicted bunchesof grapes and leaves in her flowing hair and is carrying a staff. A panther’s pelt is draped along her shoulderwith a detailed face of the panther depicted as well. Overall it is a superbpiece and wonderful example of Victorian cameo carving.

This is a museum quality piece carved in excellent detail. You can see all of the features of the cameo.I could not determine who the carver was.However, there is a signature on the back of the piece. Unfortunately, I cannotdecipher the signature. My measurements for the cameo are 2.0625 inch Length //1.75 inch Width.

Mount: The gold 15k brooch (acid tested at 14k) is in great condition as well. 15k wasa British Commonwealth gold standard during the Victorian era. The total sizeof the piece with brooch is 2.375 inches Length & 2.0625 inches Width. Thetotal weight of the piece is 18.1 grams.Based upon the mounting T-pin and C-clasp it appears to be Victorian inage.

Condition: Overall the cameo is in great condition. As is common with shell cameos of thisage. there are some fine hair lines on the cameo. These lines are most visibleon the upper left above the head and lower right below the cheek. These linesdo not cross the entirety of the cameo, pass through the shell, or detract fromthe beauty of the piece. There is also some dirt right at the top of the head near the grape bunch stem. I have not cleaned the cameo. I have made every effort to provide accuratephotographic evidence of any blemishes I have identified during my inspectionof the item.
