Norwich Connecticut 1760 Original Promissory Note For Payment In "lawful Money" For Sale
Arare original manuscript promissory note dated Norwich, Connecticut, June 14, 1760 between William Darbe [Darby] of Canterbury, and Elisha Lathrop Jr. of Norwich, for the sum of "twelve pounds Lawfull money" to be re-paid to Lathrop within a few months. Signed by Darbe and witnessed by Phineas Tracy, with court attestation of settlement of debt on reverse. Size 4 3/4" x 7 3/4", folds, handmade rag paper, very good condition. This debt had obviously been brought to court for non-payment, a serious step at a time when debtors could be imprisoned. These promissory notes were used at the time for payment of all debts, and would be accepted because currency and hard money were not readily available in the colonies.....Elisha Lathrop [1713-1787] was apparently quite a character. He was a captain in the French and Indian War, and was killed at age 74 when felling a tree after fathering nineteen children...Guaranteed original. An historic Colonial American financial document....$4.00 shipping............
