Gold Encrusted German Porcelain
Absolutely gorgeous antique porcelain cup and saucer with whimsical nymphs and winged fairies cavorting around the rims. We aren’t sure what company made the porcelain but both pieces are marked with the Bavarian decorating studio mark “Trettau”. We have had Hutschenreuther porcelain plates in the past that had this same fairy design. The Trettau studio decorated blanks from other German porcelain factories as well. The borders on this pair are decorated with heavily encrusted gold and the inner surface of the cup is completely covered with gold. This is a small espresso size cup which holds around 3 ounces of liquid. The cup stands 2 ½” (6.3 cm) tall at the handle and the saucer has a diameter of 4 ¾” (12.2 cm).
Condition: This wonderful cup and saucer are in excellent condition with no chips cracks or repairs. The gold decoration has no worn areas. This pair was obviously very gently used, as there are only a small number of light utensil scratches in the cup. The gold on the cup’s interior has very faint spotting, but nothing you’d notice unless you were searching for it. There is one teeny tiny “nibble” which appears as a white dot near the center of the saucer. On the top edge of the cup’s foot there is a factory flaw paint skip or dimple in the gold (see detail photo).
