John Herschel Glenn Jr. (July 18, 1921–December 8, 2016), was a former aviator,US Marine Corps colonel, engineer, astronaut,and United States senator.He was selected as one of the \"MercurySeven\" group of military testpilots selected in 1959 by NASAto become America\'s first astronauts and fly the ProjectMercury spacecraft.

On February 20, 1962, Glenn flew the Friendship7 mission and became the first Americanto orbitthe Earthand the fifth person in space, after cosmonauts YuriGagarin and GhermanTitov and the sub-orbital flightsof Mercury astronauts AlanShepard and GusGrissom. Glenn is the earliest-born American to go to orbit,and the second earliest-born man overall after Soviet cosmonaut GeorgyBeregovoy. Glenn received the Congressional SpaceMedal of Honor in 1978, and was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Famein 1990. With the death of ScottCarpenter on October 10, 2013, Glenn became the last survivingmember of the Mercury Seven.

Glenn resigned from NASA on January 16, 1964, and the next day announcedplans to run for a U.S. Senate seat from Ohio;however, a bathroom fall which resulted in a concussion caused him to withdrawfrom the race in March. He retired from the Marine Corps on January 1, 1965. Amember of the Democratic Party,he finally won election to the Senate in 1974 and served through January 3,1999. With the death of EdwardBrooke on January 3, 2015, Glenn became the oldest livingformer United States Senator.

On October 29, 1998, while still a sitting senator, he became the oldestperson to fly in space, and the only one to fly in both the Mercury and Space Shuttle programs,when at age 77, he flew as a Payload Specialiston Discoverymission STS-95.He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedomin 2012.

Glenn died on December 8, 2016, at the OSU Wexner Medical Center; he livedto be 95. No cause of death was disclosed. After his death, his body lay instate at the Ohio Statehouse. There was a memorial service atMershon Auditorium at Ohio State University. His body will be interred atArlington National Cemetery. According to the Public Affairs Office forArlington National Cemetery, his body has not yet been interred at Arlington asof March 2017 and is planned to be on April 6, 2017. The Public Affairs Officefor Arlington National Cemetery can not disclose the exact date of his scheduledinterment at Arlington National Cemetery.

Tributes

President Barack Obama said that John Glenn, \"thefirst American to orbit the Earth, reminded us that with courage and a spiritof discovery there\'s no limit to the heights we can reach together\". Tributeswere also paid by President-elect Donald Trumpand former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

\"Godspeed\" which hailed Glenn\'s launch into space, became partof his social-media hashtag: #Godspeedjohnglenn. Former and current astronautsadded tributes; so did NASA Administrator and former shuttle astronaut Charles Bolden,who wrote: \"John Glenn\'s legacy is one of risk and accomplishment, ofhistory created and duty to country carried out under great pressure with thewhole world watching.\" President Obama ordered Flags to be flown at half-mastuntil Glenn\'s burial.
