River People Blanket“Regardless of the medium, my work directlyrelates to and honors my ancestors, my people,the Environment and the animals.” Lillian Pitt
Internationally- renowned, Pacific Northwest and Native American artist Lillian Pittdesigned this blanket exclusively for Pendleton. Shewas inspired by petroglyphs in the Columbia RiverGorge and Central Oregon. Her ancestors lived in theGorge for more than 10,000 years, until the mid-1880s.They called themselves the River People, and theycalled the Columbia River simply the Big River, orNch’i-Wana.
The repeat patterns on the River People blanket areknown as the Salmon Gill design. Among some tribesin Oregon and Northern California it is called theQuail Plume design and is mostly used in baskets andhats of the Plateau People of the Northwest.Colors reflect the blue of the mighty River and the huesof rocky canyon walls from which the natives fished.The design represents the various life stages of thesalmon’s migratory life cycle and the River Peoplewho depended on the fish for sustenance.
The other side of the blanket is as beautiful as the reverse but the background is black with colorful designs. .
Proceeds of this sale benefit the education and interpretive programsat Fort Vancouver on the Columbia River in Washington State.
The non-profits Friends of Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and the Museum at WarmSprings have commissioned Pendeltonfor a limited andexclusive run of 125 blankets only.
