Alice was born around 1946 in a hogan at Cow Springs, in the Tonaleasection of Arizona. Alicelearned how to make pottery from her mother, Rose Williams, an innovativeNavajo potter who had been trained by her aunt, Grace Barlow, who had raisedRose at Shonto. Grace, Rose, and Alice have been the inspiration for manyNavajo potters who have recently tried to make pottery for the\"market.\"

Aftergraduating from an Indian school, Alicemarried Jerry Cling. They have four children who make pottery now, too. Thefamily digs the brown-firing clay from a special place near Black Mesa, screensit to eliminate impurities, and mixes it with sand for temper and with water tomake it workable. Alice\'sparticularly unusual aesthetic contribution to the Navajo pottery renaissanceis the magnificent coloration she achieves on the softly burnished and lightlypitch-coated surfaces of her forms.

Alice is a very well knownartist whohas developedtechniques that have given her pieces aunique yet distinctly Navajo look.Using methods such asapplyingwarm pitch to the pots after firing through the use of various methods ofburnishing she has created pottery pieces that are simple andbeautiful.Pigmentation is her preferred choicefor decorating her work.

Herpots, embellished with the traditional thin coat of pitch, are deceptivelysimple. Their lasting beauty comes from her unusual use of clay and from thestriking colors caused by outdoor firing.

Navajoclay-work for hundreds of years was made for domestic or ceremonial use only.No railroad stations or museums existed in this vast, sparsely populated desertlandscape to spark a demand for tourist goods or for scholarly endeavors thatwould bring the art of potters to the fore.

Someof her works were chosen by Joan Mondale for use in the vice president\'s housein Washington, D.C., during their tenure.Alice has also receivednumerous awards at regional Indian fairs and powwows.
