Navajo Pendant Horse Onyx Blue Lab Opal Sterling Silver Western Calvin Begay

WELCOME to High Desert Turquoise!

They copy his work everywhere in the southwest, but the one to collect is the one that says Calvin Begay on the back! This is the one with sustainable value so don\'t be fooled. Calvin Begay is to contemporary Navajo inlay work what H*a*r*r*y M*o*r*g*a*n was to revivalist lapidary work. Many critics consider Calvin the best Navajo inlay artist working today.

Calvin began making jewelry at age 10, and over the years has won numerous awards at the Gallup Ceremonial including the top prize, Best in Show in 1989, and Best Box in 1991. His designs have been featured in \"Arizona Highways\" magazine and other southwestern magazines and can be found in several prestigious private collections and exhibitions. Calvin often says that his most significant artistic inspiration has been the famed Fabergé eggs with their complex designs and use of many precious and semi gemstones that Calvin also utilizes in his designs.

This creative spirit also finds time to compete in rodeos and drive his all terrain vehicles in the remote desert back country of the Navajo reservation and environs. Calvin lives where he was raised -- in the small Navajo community of Tohatchi, New Mexico.

When you consider and hopefully buy Calvin Begay pieces, be sure Calvin made it. In the recent past, Calvin worked for a well known Gallup manufacturing company creating original designs for them to sell. Most of his jewelry designs bear the hallmark initials of the company he worked for and their copyright, Calvin\'s script hallmark, and the hallmark of the artist who actually did the silver and inlay work. While this is still valuable, it\'s the second kind of Calvin\'s work that a collector should buy. These are pieces that Calvin himself made and bear only his and and his former company\'s hallmarks or, more recently his hallmark alone.

This dramatic contemporary horse pendant\'s inlay channel measures ¾\" by about 5/16ths\" andfeatures ten micro inlays of midnight black onyx and colorful fiery multi shaded blue lab opal. The free floating onyx and lab opal inlaid teardrop shaped bail has a usable interior diameter of 5/16ths.\"

The sterling silver horse measures 1 and 1/8th\" in height and 1½\" in width. Including the bail, the horse\'s total height is 1½.\"

The Spanish explorer/invader Coronado brought dozens of horses of Arabian descent with him and his army from Spain when they explored/invaded the southwest in search of cities made of gold. By the time he left for Mexico, his herd of horses had substantially increased and many were left behind. Those that didn\'t escape became the prize possessions of those Native Americans fortunate to obtain one. Those who did escape are the ancestors of the wild horses who roam free today in the west and southwest.

The back ofthe pendantsolid sterling silver -- Calvin never cuts corners unlike so many cheap foreign made pendants.

Calvin\'s work is collected by clients not only in the southwest but across the country and throughout the world.

This is museum quality Calvin Begay work -- no surrogates!

Calvin\'s semi script hallmark his sterling silver stamp are on the back ofthe pendant.
