Navy Ships USS Partridge AM-16 Brant Rail Ortolan Mine Sweeper Photos 1930s WWII:
$18.50

Offered are two late 1930s era photographs, pre-WWII or perhaps 1939 to early 1940s showing four US Navy mine sweepers docked in San Diego, probably at 32nd Street Naval base.

These two photographs were part of a group ofvacation snapshots from an estate sale, one photo showed two actresses at the Uplifters club in LA--see this in one of my other sales. But other photos showing navy ships were identified from San Diego\'s Coronado Island, then called Rockwell Field.

Thesetwo photos show the fronts and backs of the following mine sweepers (wrongly identified as \"destroyers\" on the backs of the photos):

  1. USS Partridge AM-16
    • On its way to the Normandy Beachfront, this boat was torpedoed by a German E-boat on June 11, 1945 and sank 13 miles off the coast of France. To learn more go to Wikipedia\'s page.
  2. USS Rail AM-26
    • This boat was docked at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese Invasion commenced, but within minutes it was returning fire with .50 calibre machine guns. It served in WWI, and several missions in WWII, including the Pacific Arena and thePhillipine Invasion. To learn more go to Wikipedia\'s page.
  3. USS Brant AM-24
    • During WWII, the Brantwas damaged byfriendly fire off the coast of Sicily when the USS Benson, thinking it was an enemy vessel, fired guns at it, killing ten and wounding fourteen. It was repaired and put back into action during the Normandy Invasion. For more info go to Wikipedia\'s page.
  4. USS Ortolan AM-45 (ASR-5)
    • This minesweeper\'s mission changed to submarine rescue boat before WWII. It was tasked with helping to salvage what was left after the Pearl Harbor invasion. It also participated in several Pacific Theater operations before it was decommissioned in 1947. For more info go to Wikipedia\'s page.

The photos measures 4 5/8 x 3 1/4 inches.

The top and bottom ends are curled. They\'ve been sitting in a box all these years.
