The craft of metalworking, like most Japanese crafts, was quite distinctly subdivided, each subdivision having its own methods andtechniques, nomenclature, and traditions. The main divisions of metal artists were chasers, casters, and wrought-metal workers. Traditionally, chasers fashioned sword furnishings; casters made temple bells, censers, and architectural ornaments; and wrought-metal artists made arms and armor. Historically, all three divisions served the aristocracy, but by the later part of the Edo period the various metal artists were producing netsuke by their respective methods to meet the growing demand and,obviously, to augment their incomes.

I have seen many octopus netsukes made, carved from variety of materials but none from bronze, so based on that i am stating that this isextremely rare netsuke.

When i first listed netsukes i really did not know much about them but i have been studying and searching them. Some people suggested this was a copy that is casted from a modern example but i say NO WAY. After studying and researching and comparing the condition and details i am sure that this is 100% very old netsuke. I am so sure that if anyone purchased this beautiful and very old netsuke and not satisfied with the age i am willing to pay for return shipping. After all i think any other ones are look like this netsuke which were made in other materials like wood are the copy of this or another rare netsuke. Isnt that the reason you dont see any other ones made in metal, if someone copied this and casted them in modern day, would not be many more around for sale just like the wood ones? Please let me know if you find other one in metal.
