\"Shoreline\" Pattern
China Butter Pat
This very old New York New Haven &Hartford Railroad china butterpat isthe Shoreline pattern, which isbelieved to be one of the earliestpatterns used by the railroad forpassenger dining car china. ANY piece in ANY condition is hard to find.
This miniature platecarries the pretty semi-script NYNH&H railway logo indark blue and green surrounded by asingle stripe. It is a tiny 3-1/4inches across. \"The Official Guide to Railroad DiningCar China\" (McIntyre) states thatShoreline reportedly was used in thefirst quarter of the 20th century.McIntyre rates it as a 4+ out of apossible 5 for rarity/desirability.
\"Restaurant China Vol.2\" (Conroy) saysthe Greenwood Pottery Company neverdate coded its china, but the impressedbottom mark found on our tiny dish wasused between 1886 and 1910.
CONDITION: It has good shiny glaze withbright strong colors and clear, sharpgraphics. There are no blurs or glazeruns. There is very light surface wearfrom use on the plate but you have totilt it in bright light to see this. Itis amazingly free from yellow agespotting. There are NO cracks, chips,flakes or repairs.
IMPORTANT -- SEE OUR PHOTOS: The only thing wrong ~~ isa sprinkling of tiny glaze pimples someof which have old brownish stains inthem. This is a manufacturing defect.Shoreline pieces apparently wereplagued with pinpricks, tiny grains ofsand and other glazing problems. Ourbutterpat does have some, the worstbeing a spot at 8-o\'clock, but it hasso many other GOOD things going for it,the glaze defects are less important.
BOTTOM MARKINGS: Made by the GreenwoodPottery Company, it is impressedGREENWOOD CHINA / TRENTON, N.J. on thebottom, along with a green printed nameof Boston, Massachusetts supplier A.Weiskopf (the distributor companythrough which the NYNH&HRR ordered thechina).
Conroy states that Greenwoodoperated between 1868 and the early1930s. She also confirms the railroadused A. Weiskopf as a supplier. There also is an impressed squigglethat looks like it should meansomething, and may or may not have beendeliberately stamped. We aren\'tfamiliar with that marking so we can\'tguess.
A difficult to find piece of very earlyrailway china, this one would be a starin any better collection of passengerdining car items, especially one with aNew England flavor
