ABOUT THE ARTIST:\"Santera\" Andrea Fresquez~Baros has been a \"Folk Art & Traditional Santos Retablo\"artist (A female who paints Santos on flat wood)) here in New Mexico for over 20 years & resides in Espanola,NM.,just outside Santa Fe..She learned the art mainly from Richard & Teresa Montoya,as well from her aunt\"Edwina Fresquez\" & from her father~in law,who has been a long time Santero here in NM, almost all his life.Andrea is Retablo artist by day & a \'mariachi\' trumpet player by night.She \'OWNS\' her art & shows at Santa Fe\'s yearly event,\"SPANISH MARKET\",where she has won awards for her art,including Best of Show awards..She is as REAL & traditional as it gets when it comes to this major form of art,here in NM..Her use of bold colors & keeping the traditional art alive,make her one of the best around.If you love your home to have all the beauty with the richness & culture of New Mexico,then this would be a great piece,since no home is complete without beautiful Retablos hanging on the wall..Andrea\'s art is as NM True as it gets & is one of the most authentic you will find!
ABOUT SAINT SEBASTIAN:St.Sebastian was an early Christian saint & Martyr who died in 288 AD after being killed during the Roman emperor Diocletians persecution of Christians...He was shown in art & literature tied to a post or tree & shot with arrows.According to legend,he was rescued & healed by Irene of Rome..Afterwards he criticizedDiocletian face to face & was then clubbed to death..He is a very popular male saint especially amongathletes.DESCRIPTION:The use of tonal colors are beautifully displayed & would go with just about any color in a home..Simplistic in design,but with the story told so well,as you can see in this smaller size retablo..Andrea drew landscapes that have a very southwest look & beautiful with the most gorgeous Folk Art detail around the perimeter that are done in orange, that only seems to accentuates & bring out the colors used in the body of the wood...
Andrea stays true to all traditional methods that have been passed down for centuries here in New Mexico.She 1st. starts by drawing the piece,free hand style onto the hand cut pine wood plaque,then uses Gesso as the primer & hand paints with acrylics.The Retablo is then finished with a high glosspolyurethane,which makes this scratch resistant & waterproof.
MEASUREMENTS:From the highest top center to the bottom measures 10\" long x 7~1/4\" wide & has a 3/4\" depth.It is signed by the artist in front\"AFB\",as well as on the back with her full name + 2015..Has a secure leather strip on back for wall hanging.
