This NYC Lines \"DeWitt Clinton\" pattern oval platter was made by Buffalo China. It measures 12-1/2\" x8-3/4\" x 1-1/4\".Itis backstamped \"Buffalo China Design Patented Made Expressly For the New York Central Lines.\" There are alsounderglaze faint tiny stampedletters \"O.A.N.\"
Condition:There are no chips, cracks or repairs. There are untensilmarks on the platter\'s well glazethat are apparent when the platter is held at angle to the light. There issome faint discoloration located on the shoulderat the arrow point. There is also missing underglaze design at the arrow point. Please see the photographs for plate condition.
Doug McIntyre states in The Official Guide to Railroad Dining Car China, p. 76, the pattern was in use from 1925-1940\'s.The NYC commissioned the pattern to commemorate the centennial of the founding of the Mohawk and Hudson Rail Road Company, the first chartered railroad in the U.S. and the NYC\'s earliest predecessor. (See Dick Luckin, Dining on Rails, p. 198.) The \"DeWitt Clinton\" locomotive is featured at the rim topmark. In 1831 it was the first locomotive to begin operations in New York State between Albany and Schenectedy. It was named for Governor DeWitt Clinton who earlier had promoted the Erie Canal.
