Nice Ancient Roman Carnelian Intaglio of Victory c. 1st - 2nd century A.D. :
$226.41
This is a wonderful ancientRoman carnelian intaglio gemstone, depicting goddess Victory. She is cut on a domed surface which makes photographing itadequatelypretty hard. She is shown advancing left holding a wreath in the classic pose, from the altar of Victory that was set in the Senate house in Rome. Such intaglios were often presented as awards for victory in battle or brave actions by the Roman military. This example is in very good excavated condition, except for a tint chip of the back of the gem which is hardly noticeable. Originally such an intaglio would have been mounted in a gold or silver finger ring and used to seal documents. Would be suitable for remounting into gold finger ring. A lovely ancient gem and a real timeless treasure!
