Non Dug Civil War 1860 Cavalry Saber Bleckmann Nj Marked For Sale
Model 1860 Cavalry saber and scabbard made by J.E. BLECKMANN of SOLINGEN. IN THILLMAN'S BOOK CIVIL WAR CAVALRY ARTILLERY SABERS, He states that the Bleckmann sabers are very difficult to find in any condition. It is believed that there was only 10.000 produced and imported. These were imported by AMES to be able to fill their first government contracts. Since this was at the outbreak of the war, most Bleckmann sabers found hard use and are in poor condition. This example has the same war used appearance. The ricasso has the Bleckman mark of a drawn bow and arrow with a B and M on either side of the arrow. The obverse is stamped with a NJ for New Jersey. The brass hilt has a mellow patina and is in very good condition. The grip retains 95% of the leather wrap that is in well worn shape. The wire braid is also present. The scabbard is also in good shape with a few scattered dents. It has a uncleaned brown patina. There is not a throat washer and no evidence that it ever had one. This is common on these examples. Overall, a very nice example of a very difficult to find saber. This was purchased years ago from the late godfather of the civil war relic world, Lawrence Christopher of Dalton GA. I am selling many items out of my collection so Don't miss my other listings. Also looking to sell a fifth generation burnside and a confederate trait 1800s shortened flintlock conversion. Thanks.
