Here’s a rare Northwest Coast, Alaska, (Inland Tlingit) Shaman’srattle. It dates to the late 19th century.
A very nice dark brown color & patina that stemmed fromyears of handling and exposure to the oily smoke atmosphere of the shaman’sdwelling. A BEAUTIFUL OBJECT….…JUST SEE PHOTOS.
One side of the rattle depicts a happy face and the otherside a frowning face. One side also has a nose and the other side doesn’t haveone (not missing a nose..just doesn’t have one)….Some traces of old glue on theother side of the happy face. This side was most likely stuck on to a museumwall or some other surface. This glue can be easily removed. Overall, therattle is in good condition for its 100= years of old age.
****A NICE AND RARE OLD SHAMAN’S RATTLE….CIRCA 1880’S – 1890’S.
IT IS MADE OUT OF REDCEDAR WOOD…A SPECIES OF TREE INDIGENIOUS TO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST REGION,AND, A VERY IMPORTANT NATURAL MATERIAL FOR THE MANY NORTHWEST COAST TRIBES.
Measures approx……. 7 INCHES LONG (18 CMS)….An old museum tagis connected to the handle.
