ONONDAGA BENEDICT STUDIOS, 19\" HAND HAMMERED COPPER TRAY, STICKLEY ERA, NICE~~~:
$850.00

For sale is a wonderful arts and crafts hand hammered copper tray made by The Onondaga Metal Shop of East Syracuse, NY. The tray is quite large as it measures 19 1/4\" in diameter outside handles measurement. The round portion if the tray is 15 3/4\". The tray stands 1 3/8\" tall.

This tray has a wonderful hand hammered texture on copper with splendid applied hand hammered decorative handles. The hand hammering is plentiful and wonderfully done. The patina is as found original condition and considered quite good. You can see some wear with the copper peeking through but the craftsman brown with black highlights brings the warmth to this piece. The handles are mounted to the top side and held in with faceted rivets. I thought when I found this it was a Gustav Stickley tray but a renown expert I asked told me the way the handles are mounted clearly shows it is not. He believes it to be early Onondaga Metal Shop manufacture just before Benedict bought the metal shop. Stickley handles are mounted from behind the tray and not on top like this one. Also he felt the handles were a little fancier than Gustav would have used on a tray. I have seen these style handles on Gustave Stickley Furniture in the past. This is what led me to believe is might have been Gustav Stickley.

This tray is considered to be in very good to excellent condition as there are no cracks or dings to the metal. The tray does show signs of normal age use and some areas of patina are weaker than others but it is original as found. The tray is not signed but I am attributing this to have been made by The Onondaga Metal Shop per expert\'s opinion above. This tray is early as it was made 1905-1906.This Tray is very large and it has to be shipped in a large 24 x 24 x 12 box. I will have to build Styrofoam wall for my double boxing. UPS is going to charge dimensional weight.
