19TH C. OFFHAND BIRD FLOURISHING - EXTREMELY RARE!
Ihave never seen an example of an OFFHAND FLOURISHING on and original examples are truly hard to find. My husband and Ipurchased this one about 45 years ago, at an sale -- in the early years of our marriage. We have slowly been downsizing our early American primitives and art as we are now retired and living our lives quite differently in a small apartment! Offhand Flourishings are \"the ultimate showcase of skill\". As W.E. Dennis wrote in his 1914 book, \"Studies in Pen Art\":
\"It is doubtful if anything in pen work require more real skill, sureness of stroke, delicacy of touch and absolute freedom of arm and hand than Off-Hand Flourishing.Certainly none of the other work inthis bookoffers the technical difficultiesfound inthe flourished designs, the most difficult of all being the two swans facing each other.Lettering is more or less mechanical but flourishing is quite the opposite. In this work the mind must conceive quicklythe arrangement of harmonious, well-balanced curves, and the hand must reproduce them without hesitation. In addition to this, the Penman should have in mind some harmonious design, pleasing in effect as a whole\".
Included in the sale of this absolutely charming little bird flourishing piece of primitive art is a small description which we received at the sale, giving a small history of this piece and where itcamefrom. In myresearch I believe that this school is still in existence.
The size of this piece in the little gold frame (original??) is 3 1/4\" x 5\".
THE DESCRIPTION READS: \"This miniature off-hand flourishing is by 19th century schoolmaster Otis Barnhart of the famed Oxford Academy, in Oxford, New York.Examples such as this one (only five are known to have survived) were given out to \"deserving\' students for exemplary behavior or academicexcellence. The Oxford Academy, founded ib 1792 and chartered in 1794, is believed to be the first school west of the Hudson River to be granted a charter and was built on the site of an earlier Iroquois village:\"
