From my personal collection for your consideration: a delightful vintage production piece from one of Donald Duck’s best theatrical shorts, Sleepy Time Donald (1947) --- a full-figure, original untrimmed production cel of Donald sleepwalking.

Written by that notorious “troublemaker,” legendary Disney gagman Roy Williams, Sleepy Time Donald has our oblivious feathered friend sleepwalking his way through what he thinks is a date with Daisy --- avoiding one imminent disaster after another thanks to a frantic Daisy’s just in time intervention.

The image appears near the end of the short (about 6:13 in) when Daisy finally is able to get Donald back to bed. However, he wakes up just as she is about to leave and accuses her of sleepwalking. The exasperated Daisy whacks him with the boot he has been wearing on his head throughout the cartoon (he had put it on at the beginning, thinking it was a hat), whereupon Donald starts sleepwalking again.

When “Moose Williams” was done harassing Donald and other Disney characters on film, he took his talent for drawing gags to TV, as the “Big Mooseketeer” on “The Mickey Mouse Club.”

DESCRIPTION/CONDITION: The beautifully detailed hand painted image of Donald is 2.00” x 3.25” (5.08 x 8.26 cm). It is on a full 10 “x 12” (25.40 x 30.48 cm) untrimmed Disney five-peg hole celluloid sheet. The number “283” appears at the bottom right, indicating the image’s place in the scene. There is a light crease just below the top right corner and a staple mark in the top left corner --- both well away from the image.

There is also some very light scuffing here and there on the sheet, as is common on a production piece of this vintage, but these areas are also away from the image. With all original paint and only a few tiny areas of the very lightest, almost imperceptible, outline wear, the image is in Fine condition. The cel comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) from a leading dealer of quality original Disney and other animation art.

PLEASE NOTE: The difference in background color between the image close-up and the full cel is because the close-up is a scan while the full cel is a photo. The “white markings” on the full cel photo are reflections and not flaws. The peg holes in the full cel photo are somewhat indistinct but are, in fact, five in number: a narrow rectangular one at each end and three round ones in the middle. Finally, for the record, the watermark shown here is not on the actual cel.
