Marcel Janco, common rendition of the Romanian nameMarcel Hermann Iancu[1](May 24, 1895 – April 21, 1984) was aRomanianandIsraelivisual artist, architect and art theorist. He was the co-inventor ofDadaismand a leading exponent ofConstructivisminEastern Europe. In the 1910s, he co-edited, withIon VineaandTristan Tzara, the Romanian art magazineSimbolul. Janco was a practitioner ofArt Nouveau,FuturismandExpressionismbefore contributing his painting and stage design to Tzara\'s literary Dadaism. He parted with Dada in 1919, when he and painterHans Arpfounded a Constructivist circle,Das Neue Leben.

Reunited with Vinea, he foundedContimporanul, the influential tribune of the Romanianavant-garde, advocating a mix of Constructivism, Futurism andCubism. AtContimporanul, Janco expounded a \"revolutionary\" vision ofurban planning. He designed some of the most innovative landmarks of downtownBucharest. He worked in many art forms, includingillustration, sculpture andoil painting.

Janco was one of the leadingRomanian Jewishintellectuals of his generation. Targeted byantisemiticpersecution before and duringWorld War II, heemigratedtoBritish Palestinein 1941. He won theDizengoff PrizeandIsrael Prize, and was a founder ofEin Hod, a utopianart colony, controversially built over a desertedPalestinian Arabsettlement.

Marcel Janco was the brotherGeorgesandJules Janco, who were his artistic partners during and after the Dada episode. His brother-in-law and fellow Constructivist promoter was the writerJacques G. Costin, known as a survivor of 1940s antisemitism.
