Description

Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games Official Participation Medal, in its original transparent plastic case. I would judgethis exampleto be in extremely fine (EF) condition or thereabouts,but please take a good look at my photographs and form your own opinion. The plastic case has lost some transparency due to the presence of a large number of very fine internal cracks (a common problem with this medal), but is generally still in acceptable condition in my opinion.

Made from Bronze, Diameter 63 mm, Thickness4 mm, Weight 106 grams, Mintage 12,250, Designer Andor Meszaros.

This is just one of a long and highly collectable line of Olympic Participation Medals, awarded to athletes, judges and other officials at virtually all the modern Olympic and Winter Olympic Games, beginning in Athens in 1896.

The Melbourne Games were the first to be held in the southern hemisphere. Australian quarantine laws were too severe to allow the entry of foreign horses, so the equestrian events were held separately in Stockholm.

The Olympic motto CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS lies within a circle of athletes marching in pairs behind a Flag bearer. The designer’s name and the date 1955 appear along the lower right rim. The reverse displays more Olympic athletes in a busy motif which also includes the Melbourne Coat of Arms and the Olympic rings. The legend OLYMPIC GAMES MELBOURNE 1956 is inscribed along its periphery.
