Old Engraving of Robert Ainslie, Esq.(1766-1838) - Works of Robert Burns, 1858:
$9.95

Beautiful antique steel engraving of Robert Ainslie, Esqr., from the Original in Possession of the Family.

Ainslie, Robert (1766-1838): The son of the land-steward of Lord Douglas\'s Berwickshire estates, Ainslie was born at Berrywell, near Duns. He was a law student in the Edinburgh office of Samuel Mitchelson when Burns met him early in 1787. His carefree disposition and his zestful pleasure in wine, women and the poet\'s song, endeared him to Burns, and Ainslie accompanied the poet on the first part of the Border tour of May 1787. At Eyemoout they were both made \'Royal Arch Masons\' of the local lodge, Ainslie on payment of a guinea fee, Burns without fee. Continuing the tour alone, Burns wrote to him regretting the absence of the laughter his presence had ensured. On 23rd July 1787, writing from Mauchline, Burns told Ainslie: \'There is one thing for which I set great store by you as a friend, and it is this - that I have not a friend upon earth, besides yourself, to whom I can talk nonsense without forfeiting some degree of his esteem\'.

I have quite a few of these engravings that were taken from two volumes of The Works of Robert Burns, copyright 1858(see second picture for title page info- these are not included in the sale- only for info.) The book bindings were falling apart and missing some sections so I decided to disassemble the book to save all thegorgeous engravings, which are of various areas of Scotland and Burns\' family and friends. See my other listings for more if interested!

Page measures approx. 9.75\" x 6.75\".

Would look great matted and/or framed!

Some edgewear, foxing and ragged edge where engraving was removed from the book\'s binding- see pic for detail.

Title pages read: \"The Works of Robert Burns; with a Complete Life of the Poet, and an Essay on His Genius and Character, by Professor Wilson. Also, Numerous Notes, Annotations, and Appendices. Embellished by an Extensive series of Portraits and landscape illustrations. In Two Volumes.
