BEAUTIFUL GERMAN 19THCENTURY .835 SILVER 3 - LIGHT CANDLEABRUM, with maker\'s mark of Crescent Moon, Crown, {silver purity) .835, and a Standing Lion.

*Design appears to be Art Nouveau*.

SILVER CONTENT: thebottom of the base isimpress stamped \".835\". (see photo gallery for close up view ofhallmarks), meaning83.5%silver content (not theweighted part hidden inside the base, just the silver part on the outside that you see).Traditionally, the standard for sterling silver purity is 0.925, although some countries had different set standards in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Silver from certain countries (i.e. Germany) was imprinted with a number lower than 0.925 due to an assay tax that had to be paid. While marked differently, most of the silver in these situations still had a purity level of 0.925. Other terminology used for marks less than .925 is \"German coin silver\".

MAKER\'S MARK: Side of the base is impress stamped with crescent moon, crown, .835, and a standing lion. THIS HALLMARK IS IDENTIFIED BY THE, \"ONLINE ENCLYCLOPEDIA OF SILVER MARKS, HALL MARKS, AND MAKERS\' MARKS\" as belonging to German maker Gebruder Kuhn Schwabisch Gmund (founded in 1860).

Note: in 1886 the use of individual marks in Germany was abolished and replaced by the national hallmards of the (Reichsmark) crescent moon and crown (Halbmond and Krone)representing the entire German state. These marks were compulsory by 1888. The crown and crescent moonare used in conjunction with a maker\'s mark and a decimal silver standard mark. Common silver standard marks are .800, .830, .835, .900, .925, .935.

WEIGHT: Total gram weight is approximately 782 grams - please note that all candleabrums (including this one) have weighted (non-silver metal weights) inside base in order to give stability to the candleabrum when it has candles on it.so the totalweight is NOT all .825silver - weighted bottom is not silver, should be deducted from total weight.

SILVER PURITY: marked \"835\" on underside bottom of base edge and also in included in the maker\'s hallmark on the side of the base.

The candle size (each candle holder) measures approximately 1\" inche in diameter. For a good fitting candle, the base of the candle close to 1 inche in diameter for a close fit, trimming the bottom of the candle if necessary so \'jamming\' the candle into the holder is avoided (forcing candle into the holder can cause damage to the holder and/or arms).

CONDITION: Used, antique, previously owned. The two outer arms are slightly bent inward - not sure if intended or not as when candles are inserted, theysit straight up (see photos in photo gallary). Bottom edge flange has a few slight crimps, probably factory made to hold in the bottom plate - not noticable unless viewed upside down (see photo). NO cracks, dents, hairlines, scratches, scars, repairs or creases. Intact piece, very solid, weighted bottom. Some spot tarnish here and there in crevices- overalla goodshine. No wax inside candle holders. Please seephotos for detailed views of physical condition, style and design.Contact seller prior to purchasing if questions or concerns.
