Up for sale is a very old Navajo Germantown sampler (blanket/rug). Design is a stepped motif with singular tentacles coming out from the edges. Turn of the century (late 1800\'s, early 1900\'s).This sampler is approximately 21\" tall by 21\" wide. The four smaller green tentacled spandrels in the side border edges of the field are not seen very often. The pronounced arrow design in the lower area of the piece is very rare.
Condition-wise, there are three condition issues. There are crude repairs in the upper section seen in detail in photos 3 and 4. Three of these repairs are present; two are small but the third and largest is approximately 3.5\" wide by .75\" tall. Another condition issue are isolated small spots seen mostly in the field. These are visible, and even though the photos were taken outdoors in outdoor light, they are visible, perhaps even more so indoors. I have not attempted to clean these. I can tell you from my past experience that spots are usually harder to clean that you originally think, but perhaps you have had better luck than me. The third condition issue involves some isolated areas of missing weft, where you can see the white cotton trade cloth warp underneath. Some of these are tiny, maybe one weft strand over one warp. But I count five where there are perhaps 2 or more warps involved, but still generally small spots. In my experience just about all old Navajo pieces have some missing weft.
Additionally, the blue/purple dye in the lower and upper borders does show fugitive surface fade, most likely the result of UV light or other natural effect over a 100 year period. Purple Germantown dyes are notorious for fade in pieces that are very old.
This great Germantown is sturdy, and intact, and in my opinion it displays well and has been in my collection a long time.
