I have a decent size collection of Ma Pae\'s some dating back to Joseon dynasty. I don\'t know too much about them except little bits of story I heard from an older Korean generations.

These Ma Pae\'s were carried around by an undercover law officers roaming the country catching bad guys for centuries. They would show this badge to identify themselves and there are 5 different ranks.

Highest rank being 5 horses (equal to 5 stars) and down to 1 horse. I guess they stop using these in early 20th century and from that point on lots of Koreans kept one or two in their homes to

protect their home from bad/evil spirits.

Several people asked if these Ma Pae badges were the ones carried by an actual officier or from the 19th century or was used by an officer in real life? Answer is \"NO\"

These version of Ma Pae\'s were most likely made at some point prior to Korean war or post Korean war at masses but they are almost impossible to find now.

I spent some time in Korea last year trying to buy some but was either unable to find any (old, older, or non brass) so in my opinion these are some of the finest examples today.
