This is a World War 2 circa 1941 photo of the USS Shaw on fire after Japan attacked the Naval base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii
The base was attacked by 353 Japanese fighters, bombers and torpedo planes in two waves, launched from six aircraft carriers
All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged, with four being sunk. All but one (Arizona) were later raised, and six of the eight battleships were returned to service and went on to fight in the war
The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship, and one minelayer
188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed
2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded
Japanese losses were light: 29 aircraft and five midget submarines lost, and 65 servicemen killed or wounded
106,207 Americans lost their lives during the Pacific Ocean Theater of WWII
On August 6th the United States dropped an atom bomb on Hiroshima, Japan
On August 8th the United States dropped a second atom bomb on the city of Nagasaki, Japan
Emperor Hirohito announced during a radio broadcast on August 15, 1945 the surrender of Japan to the Allies
