BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:

OlintoGhilardi(1848 – 1930) was a seminal figure in Indian art at the turn of the last century, and made key contributions to the emergence of theBengalschool.Ghilardi(often misspeltGilardi) was Vice-Principal (and occasionally acting Principal) of theGovernmentArtCollegeinCalcuttafrom 1885 to 1886, and then from 1888 to 1905. At a time when London was the normal destination for ambitious Indian art students,Ghilardi(himself of Italian origin) arranged for Italian training stints for many early Indian artists who were his students ( R.K. Nag, Sashi Hesh etc).

Ghilardi\'s name is popular - in equal measure - also due to his association with Abanindranath as his teacher and mentor. While Charles Palmer taught Abanindranath oil painting (a technique that he almost never used),Ghilardiinitiated Abanindranath in the techniques of watercolor, pastels and gouache - a technique that Abanindranath used for the execution of a majority of his ouvre.

Ghilardi’s works are rare to come across, as he was not a salon artist, and therefore did not produce a huge body of works. An extremely important artist from the art historical point of view, his contribution to the rise of theBengalschool was similar in nature and importance to Walter Langhammer’s contribution to the rise of the Progressive Art Group. Both played an important role in gathering together the budding talents of the day and inspiring them with the latest ideas from the art movements of the West.
