ONCE IN A LIFETIME Quiet Birdmen NY Hangar Sign in book 1931-33 100s aviators:
$32500.00
This is a unique and rare piece of Aviation History. A must have for pilots, air enthusiasts and WWI scholars.
Ye Anciente and Secret Order of Quiet Birdmen, is a privateclub for male pilots, formed in January, 1921, by Richard Blythe along withfriend and public relations man, Harry A. Bruno, and a group of World War Ipilots. The group first met in New York City at Marta, an Italian restaurant inGreenwich Village, but, because of the growing size of the group or theirraucous behavior (which led to the moniker Quiet Birdmen), they were asked tostop holding their meetings there. The group soon began to spread throughoutthe country, forming regional clubs or \"hangars.\"
This is the sign in book for the NY hangar\'s weekly meetingfrom Oct 12 1931 to January 29 1934.
Each week, at the top of the page, there is either some information about next week\'smeeting \"Howard Hughes taking gang to see \"Sky Devils\" Rememberfree beefsteak dinner next Monday at Olympic Club\"; something humorous\"Everyone sober!!! Too bad better luck next week\" and all too often\" Silent Toast to QB Fred Ames who went west, Sunday near Boston\"noting the death of a pilot.
Each page is a snapshot in time-- barnstormers, war aces, test pilots, and manufacturers sitting shoulder to shoulder--laughing, drinkingand trading stories.
Just a few of the men who signed in in this book are:
Wiley Post
Ivan Gates-founder of Gates Flying Circus
Howard Hughes (2 separate meetings)
Alexander Seversky
Richard Blythe--founder
Tommy Tomlinson
Clyde Pangborn

Clayton Knight--also illustrated the first page of the book
and hundreds more that you can spend many many fascinatinghours researching.
In full disclosure:The book has condition issues:
The Cover is completely taped together, the first severalpages are attached to the front cover then the binding is split. The majority of the book is completelydetached from the covers, but is still well bound together, the last several pages are still securelyattached to the back cover.
The meetings for December 1933 and January 1934 are tippedin the book in the back.
I would suggest that the book be professionally rebound bythe buyer who could choose their own covering.
