This Kayseri Saph Prayer Rug is estimated to be over 70 years old (1940s).
I came to it by inheritance having been in my family for about 50 years.The name Saph is given to prayer rugs made at Kayseri Turkey. The early rugs , of which these are replicas, were of much larger format, which permitted each niche to receive one person at the time of prayer.Here, the \"Mihrabs\" are 7 in number.
The rug issymmetricalin knot with cottonwarp/weft, the pile is compression wool (artificial silk, in artdeco terms)The rug measures 2.8 X8.2 (22.96 sq.Ft) Thebackgroundcolor is predominately dark golds, with rusts, brick, light blue, medium blue, yellow, brown, mauve,rose, rustand aquas.
The condition is excellent according to rugappraisers. There appears some light fading due to the age.
Appraised in 2005 for $3,500.00.
