Up for sale is an antique 100% genuine and original Currier & Ives lithograph from 1887:

“THE DARKTOWN FIRE BRIGADE - HOOK AND LADDER GYMNASTICS

Brace her up dar! and cotch her on de fly!\"

Between 1879 and 1890, Currier & Ives issued a series of color lithographs embracing all the worst stereotypes about Black Americans in the post-Civil War period. These prints reduced Blacks to buffoonish cartoon characters that the primarily white consumers couldn’t get enough of, a painful testimony of the racial attitudes of white, middle class Americans during this time. It’s “Darktown” series was actually one of Currier & Ives’ best-sellers.

This print shows a fire brigade of African-Americans attempting to put out a fire and rescue people from a burning house. The men’s fire hoses have leaks causing poor pressure and cannot reach the house, a man is being swung haphazardly through the air on a ladder while a fireman stands behind him holding a spear about to stab him as he falls. Two firemen have trumpets, one waving his arms in the air wearing a cowboy hat. A chaotic scene!

Condition: The paper is laid on cardboard, and shows toning and soiling. There is some wear and damage around the edges, including tears that are pasted to the board. Please view the photos for additional details and the most accurate description of its description.
