Original Antique Map A View Of London About The Year 1560, R.agas, maitland, 1756:
A superb copper-plate engraving of Elizabethan London, published in William Maitland’s, “History of London” in 1756. The very finely engraved map shows London from the Tower of London in the East to Westminster Hall in the West. Below the map there is a 47 point key detailing ‘The Remarkable Places in this Antient View of London that are not distinguished by Words in the Body thereof’. Beneath the map there is an inscription reading ‘Reduced to this size from a large print in the collection of Sir Hans Sloane Baronet. Anno 1738’. The large map referred to in this inscription is thought to be a view of London attributed to Ralph Agas (c.1540-1629).
The map is uncoloured as published and printed on hand-laid, watermarked paper with the printed area (including the key) measuring approximately 465mm x 300mm with generous margins beyond; blank verso.
Condition report: Excellent condition. There is light age toning as is to be expected and just a few age spots to the left edge of the sheet, well away from the printed area. There are two vertical folds as issued. Overall this is a superb example of a highly sought after map. Please study the photographs carefully to fully appreciate the condition.
