A superbcopper-plate engraving of Elizabethan London, published in William Maitland’s, “Historyof London” in 1756. The very finely engraved map shows London from the Tower ofLondon in the East to Westminster Hall in the West. Below the map there is a 47point key detailing ‘The Remarkable Places in this Antient View of London thatare not distinguished by Words in the Body thereof’. Beneath the map there isan inscription reading ‘Reduced to this size from a large print in thecollection of Sir Hans Sloane Baronet. Anno 1738’. The large map referred to inthis inscription is thought to be a view of London attributed to Ralph Agas(c.1540-1629).

The map isuncoloured as published and printed on hand-laid, watermarked paper with theprinted area (including the key) measuring approximately 465mm x 300mm withgenerous margins beyond; blank verso.

Condition report:Excellent condition. There is light age toning as is to be expected and just afew age spots to the left edge of the sheet, well away from the printed area. There are two vertical folds as issued. Overall this is a superb example of ahighly sought after map. Please study the photographs carefully to fullyappreciate the condition.
