A superb, original, antique, copper-engraved, double hemisphere world map by the renowned geographer and historian Philipp Cluver. The map was published in Cluver\'s Introductionis in Universam Geographicus ... in c.1697.
The map is printed on good quality, hand-laid paper with a bold, clear impression. It measures approximately 302mm x 160mm with small margins on three sides and a larger top margin; blank verso. The map is outline hand-coloured.
The area surrounding the hemispheres is superbly decorated with allegorical figures representing the continents, and Atlas is depicted between the hemispheres with the world on his shoulders, surrounded by wind heads and fire. California is depicted as a peninsula and there is a huge \'Terra Australis Incognita\'.
Condition report: Excellent overall condition. Very light age toning to the edges of the sheet. Vertical crease to the left edge of the printed area (to allow the map to fit within the source publication). The paper guard used in the binding process is still attached to the top edge of the sheet. The margins are trimmed close on three sides with a larger top margin which would allow mounting and framing if desired. Please study the photographs carefully to fully appreciate the condition.
