If you have any ? please ask.If you have an opinion on this please contact me and i will pass it on. Check out my other items for sale. I will be adding more every week.Very nice sling! However the length makes it a pattern 1868 sling post Civil War, the pattern 1839 slings were 44\" and the pattern 1857 slings were 46\".Hi DaveI collect US Military Long Arms and have over 100 currently on my care. They range from Flintlocks of the French & Indian War and Revolutionary War all the way to what is currently in use. Most have the correct bayonet/scabbard and period correct sling. I\'ve done a lot of research from lots of different sources and this is what I\'ve complied regarding slings: pattern 1808 46\"X1 1/4\" loop ties w/sliding loop, pattern 1839 44\"X1 1/4\" standing loop & single hook w/ sliding loop (square at hook), pattern 1857 46\"X1 1/4\" standing loop & single hook w/ sliding loop (tapered at hook), pattern 1868 65\"X1 1/14\" standing loop & single hook w/ sliding loop (one piece and two piece sewn), pattern 1875 65\"X1 1/4\" button & single hook w/ two sliding loops (two piece sewn), pattern 1880 65\"x1 1/4\" button & single hook w/ two sliding loops (single piece), pattern 1887 66-1/2\"X1 1/4\" button with double claw w/ two sliding loops (type 1 narrow claws - round holes - one piece, type 2 wide claws - slotted holes - one piece, type 3 wide claws - slotted holes - two piece sewn), then it goes to model 1907 leather sling which is the same leather sling currently in use if a it\'s leather.
Sorry to be so long winded but wanted to share what I know about the leather slings. Not one central reference that will cover it all.
Don
Starting with the trial breachloading conversions after the civil war the arms got shorter and the sling swivels changed distance apart. The first rifles would have been the Springfield trapdoor conversions referred to as Allin Conversions the man at Springfield who designed the conversions. The 1865 and 1866 models were the same length as the muzzle loading rifles of the civil war and took the same slings. Then the models 1869, and 1870 were no longer conversions but used parts from the old muskets and that\'s were the longer slings started being used. Then there were other trail rifles made in 1870-1872 all were caliber 50-70 except the Spencer and these rifles would have used this sling as well as the first runs of the model 1873 trapdoor which became the newly adopted rifle in 45-70. Any arm made mid 1870s could have started using the pattern 1875 but the 1868 would have continued to be used until no longer serviceable. I have the 1868 on eight rifles, Springfield 1868, SF 1870, sharps rifle 1870 converted by SF, rolling block 1871 assembled by SF, Ward Burton 1870 bolt action by SF, Spencer rifle 1871 converted by SF, early 1873 SF trap door and late 1873 (1877) SF trap door.
Thanks for the info. This is still a very nice first pattern example of an original 1868 sling that i\'m sure someone would want in their collection
