This canteen is 100% original Civil War period issue. It has not been reworked for Spanish American War use. Brown covers are desirable to collectors since these may have been used by Union or Confederate service. After theinitial offer is made the shill buyer offers in small, repetitive increments to raisethe price to the “straight” buyers’ maximum offer amount. This helps raise the offer price and minimizesthe risk of the seller winning the sale.

If they do end up buying the item they may relist it at alater. Another option for the crooked selleris a partner in crime collectible seller who relists the item under theiraccount name. Another way these shill sellers run their scheme is to openseveral fake seller accounts with using different names and financialinformation than the ones they use for their primary seller account.These fake seller names and fake locations, for example Dallas, TX, Palm Beach, Fl, or simply United States are apparentlyeasy to open.

When a shill buyer is reported to the CS rep. onlylooks for names and credit cards on the primary account and the reported shillaccount. If there is not an obvious match, the shill report is apparentlydisregarded. I say this because an CS rep. stated this to me duringa phone call about a high volume account that looked very, very suspect.

There are several ways for a buyer to protect themselvesand spot the shill offerding scams.
