Offered here is a Civil War US Model 1850 foot officer\'s sword. With an overall length of 36.25\" and a blade length of 30.5\", this sword is of the variety carried by line officers in the Union Army. It includes its original sharkskin grip with full, intact wire wrapping (twisted wire center with straight wire on either side). There is some minor loss to the sharkskin near where the pommel cap meets the grip (see closeup photo). Gilt brass guard and pommel with brass ring at base of grip. Blade is unsharpened and is quite exquisite on its lower half, but carries a much darker patina on its upper half due to exposure from scabbard damage. Etching on the lower portion, though, is fantastic. Adjacent to crossed US Flags is the patriotic slogan \"Stand by the Union.\" There is an etched Federal eagle on both sides of the blade, rather than just one as is often found. The mark of the major firm Schuyler Hartley & Graham is etched on the ricosso. This is a solid sword up and down. Excellent fit between the blade and the grip. Includes original leather scabbard in rather poor condition. The leather is rough and split along where the blade\'s edge would be between the throat brass section and the brass drag. The leather is also overly soft, resulting in a scabbard that buckles under its own weight. It is suggested that the sword be drawn and replaced on a flat table in order to prevent any further deterioration to the scabbard. With the sword sheathed, the scabbard does retain shape.
